Blankenese
Between the Elbe beach and the staircase district
Blankenese was once a tranquil fishing village on the River Elbe – today it is one of the most sought-after residential areas in the Hanseatic city. Around 13,000 residents call this special district home, including a few prominent names. What makes Blankenese so unique is its winding staircase district with almost 5,000 steps, historic captains’ houses, the beautiful Elbe beach and a panoramic view that is impressive in any weather.
Leisure tips
The centre of Blankenese has a market square next to the Protestant church. Three times a week, the square is transformed into a lively weekly market. Blankenese’s Bahnhofstraße is the main shopping street, where you will also find a supermarket and several bakeries. The Blankenese cinema is small but nice, with a good selection of current films.
The Treppenviertel (staircase district) is the heart of Blankenese, towered over by the Süllberg. There are countless staircases leading past the closely built houses. The Hotel and Restaurant Süllberg (currently undergoing a change of ownership, still closed) is worth a visit. The majestic building has a huge terrace with a fantastic view of the Elbe.
The beach path runs from Falkensteiner Ufer to Mühlenberg, where you will find beautiful houses, charming cafés and restaurants, the Op’n Bulln ferry terminal, the lighthouse, the lovely beach hotel and the Blankenese and Mühlenberg sailing clubs.
The Elbe Trail leads westwards to the Willkomm Höft ship greeting facility and eastwards to Hamburg city centre.
The ferry to Cranz departs from Op’n Bulln, from where you can take a bike ride through the Alte Land (fruit orchards as far as the eye can see).
